This Weekend Results…..

The 8 Harriers who competed in the London Marathon at the weekend discovered, the hard way, two axioms of Marathon running; the race doesn’t really start until you have reached 20 miles and secondly there’s no substitute for training mileage. School teacher Toby Draper was on a big pb when he turned left into the Mall. The sight of the finish inspired him to try a sprint – and with 300m to go his legs crumpled under him – 5 minutes later he hobbled out of the first-aid tent, to the applause of nearby spectators, and limped along to finish in 3h7m33s. He was still the first Harrier to cross the line. Louise Brass was the only PB of the day with 3h11m05s. Like Keith Willett and Tony Tobin she found the final 3 miles extremely painful.  Interrupted training in recent months has hampered Keith and Tony, so they can take satisfaction from their times of 3h10m13s and 3h18m50s. Martin Mack ran a well controlled race to record 3m26m. Paul Green returned 3h29m and uttered the fateful words “never again” while Kirk Bundy enjoyed his 3h41m run. Paul Mitchell, if he had dipped over the line, would have broken 4 hours. As it was, his time was 4h exactly. Thurrock’s Parkrun saw Mason Hambleton and Jamie Mack record the two fastest times of the day. Mason 20m04s was a...

This Weekend Results…..

This is a quiet time for the club’s endurance athletes. After the cross-country season and before the track season, and with road races rare in the run up to the London Marathon, Parkruns provide an outlet for their abilities. However it’s a track event that catches the eye this week. Gemma Holloway began her Summer programme with an outstanding run at the Watford open meeting. Running in the mixed 3k ‘A’ race she broke the club’s 30 year old record with a time of 9m27.21s, just 9 hundredths of a second better than the previous mark. This was set...
