Hurdler’s Courage Ensures Seniors’ Success at Lee Valley

Club stalwart Michael Shortall’s unbroken record of attendance at 20 years of Southern League matches remains intact after sustaining a serious eye injury last week. Michael was determined to compete for Thurrock Harriers AC in his favourite events, the 110m Hurdles and 400m Hurdles and gained a valuable 11 points for the club.  Michael contributed to an excellent win by the team over St Albans by just 10 points with possible promotion next year, provided there is a similar commitment at the last match on 20th August. Other excellent performances came from Kendrea Nwaelene who won all three of her events and gained two personal bests in the Long and Triple Jump.  Jess Whitbread worked hard in the B String Long Jump with a long overdue personal best jump of 5.11m. The men’s 4x100m Relay team were magnificent, winning by a gap of 40m in a time of 44.33 and getting ever closer to the prestigious club record of 43.1 set in 1997. Three young intrepid novices, Sam Smith (3000m SC), Becky Barnard and Lucie Ball (1500mSC), tried out the Steeplechase event. “Never again! “ said Becky, who went on to run in the 4x400m Relay only 10 minutes later.  All three athletes scored 16 points between them. Sixteen year old Charlie Splarn stepped up to win the B string 200m and 15 year old Liam Chivers ran a...
