Gold at European XC Championships for Gemma Holloway

Gemma Holloway overcame some health issues in the preceding weeks to return with a triumphantly won team gold medal in the European Cross Country Championships. These were held in Sardinia at the weekend. Gemma was representing the UK in the under 20 level race and was the four women teams 3rd scorer. This performance underlines what a tough and talented athlete this Grays-based Harrier is. Also in a winning team was former Harrier, Jess Judd, who ran in the under 23 category. The Club’s Essex representatives did well in the SEAA match at Oxford. Best performance was produced by Amber Pullinger who was 9th in the under 17 race. Amber has another year in this age group so is showing real promise. The Essex team is also very strong and just missed out on a gold medal. Hayley Instance was 19th in the under 15 race – a great effort from the Stanford Le Hope athlete. Leon Wheeler was 47th in the under 15 boys team. Leon is a crucial member of the Clubs very strong under fifteen squad which is looking to win their section in the Essex League and in the County Championships next month. Sue Beck produced a 10k pb in the Olympic Park 10k. Her time of 46:38 was a big step forward for this promising newcomer to the...

Thurrock Harriers Endurance Press Report

The Cross-Country Championship Season opened on Saturday with the County Young Athletes and Veterans’ Championships. It was held on a new course at Writtle Agricultural College in perfectly sunny conditions. Just 2 bronze medals were the Harriers reward. Hayley Instance ran a gutsey race to take the bronze medal in the under 15’s, and with it earns selection for the main intercounties race in February. Hayley is in the first year of this age group so this was an especially good performance. At the other end of the age spectrum Mick Bumstead ran his usual well judged race to win bronze in the 60+ age group. Mick has been winning medals at these events for the last 40 years and this medium of the sport is his least favourite!! Great disappointment struck the U15 boys section. They returned home with bronze medals but, later after a recount they were relegated to 4th place behind Ilford. Ben Prior 13th and Harry Parker 25th didn’t find part of the course to their liking but fought on to the finish.  Jamie Mack is showing return to his best form and can be pleased with his 30th place and Henri Willett was delighted to be part of the scoring quartet in the very strong team. Another top 10 finisher was Demi Eves who was 6th in the under 13 girl’s event and will...

Thurrock Harriers Endurance Report

Gemma Holloway made a good start to the British cross challenge on Saturday at the Milton Keynes meeting. She was 2nd in the under 20 section to old rival Harriet Knowles-Jones from Warrington. This performance sets her up nicely for the forthcoming championship races. There were 4 other good performances from coach Brenda Stone’s squad; Hayley Instance was 8th in the under 15 girls race and Amber Pollinger 19th in the under 17 girls, Ben Prior showed great form in the under 15 boys by finishing 18th and Sam Smith ran well to finish 33rd in the under 20 men. Pat Dobbs, running in the Epsom 10, which included the Southern Veterans AC championships finished 2nd in his V75 age group with a time 97m28s. Pat hopes his medal winning streak will continue in the forthcoming months. This Saturday round 3 of the Essex League takes place at the Cambridge and Coleridge course on the borders of Essex and Cambridgeshire. Hopefully again all squads will be at full strength to continue the successful opening of the campaign this season. Claire...
