Thurrock Endurance Report

Five endurance athletes tackled the normally very fast Chelmsford 10k course on Sunday afternoon. They all finished in the first hundred, in the 500 strong field, but these times were slowed by strong cross-winds. First across the line was Keith Martin with a time of 39.09 – for 30th place. Anthony Tobin was 3 places and 24 seconds behind. Nick Trencher ducked under forty minutes in 38th place. Tim Margtin was 55th in 40.56 and Gary Rowatt 86th in 43.15. Dave...

Gemma Holloway was an outstanding winner at the opening Essex County League Match on Saturday. One Tree Hill was the spectacular venue for this event. Gemma has opted to run with the seniors this year, although she is still under 20. She dominated the race on Saturday, beating Davies of Springfield, 20 years her senior. The other individual winner Leon Wheeler took the under 15 race leading his team to victory too. This looks a strong group heading for the Winter. Ben Prior 11th, Harry Parker 18th and Jamie Mack 25th made up the victorious squad with Henri Willett 39th and Ellis Swindell 46th there as strong backup. The senior men, in spite of losing many members to marshalling duty, fielded 10 men and excelled to come joint 3rd in the team race – which is the best they’ve done for a couple of years. Alec Finch pb’d in 7th place and looked as if he will improve on this through the Winter. Three newly arrived under 20s from Brenda Stone’s group made all the difference. Sam Smith was an eye opening 24th, Jodie Meredith 31st and Oliver Mann 33rd. It was great to see Scott Rice back in action in 34th place. The six man team closed in with Anthony Tobin producing a promising 72nd place. Don Lawless 51st, Mick Bumstead 109th, Gary Rowlatt 122nd and John Russell...

Harriers visit from England Athletics and Weekly News

The endurance runners were confronted with an unprecedented clash of fixtures at the weekend finding the County Pleshey Half Marathon clashing with the ever popular Southend 10k. The only club runner making it to the Pleshey Half Marathon was Mick Bumstead, who exceeded even his own expectations by taking the winners prize in the 60+ category. Mick won his first county title 27 years ago and has been winning them regularly since but in a year where he has been plagued by injury, this came as a particularly pleasing victory. Six club runners were among the 1200 finishers in the Southend 10k and all ran well. They were headed by Toby Draper who was 45th in 39m08s. Jason Syrett was pleased to duck under 40m again finishing 55th in 39m49s. Also making it to the top 100 was Gary Cahill with 41m59. Orsett’s Gary Rowlatt produced an excellent pb with a time of 42m51s. The indefatigable Patt Dobbs, now at an age when most people find it difficult to get out of a chair, completed the 6.25 miles in 61 minutes. Sue Beck, still inexperienced, knocked 18 minutes (!) from her previous best by finishing overall 240 in a time of 47m01s. This weekend the club hosts the first round of the Essex X-C league at One Tree Hill on Saturday. First race is at 10.00 with the open...
