Thurrock Harriers U17m win

Thurrock Harriers young athletes took part in the EYAL plate final today at Jarmens athletic track Hemel Hempstead, after taking on some big clubs such as Basildon and Chelmsford throughout the season to earn their place they made it comfortably in the plate final. The U17m triumphed in their section coming first and winning the sought after trophy (see picture attached although some of the team are missing) Although the final results aren’t fully published, Thurrock came 4th overall, which is a great achievement highlighting that the club and its athletes are moving up the rankings and becoming a club to worried about when up against them in track and field. Coaches and committee members would like to congratulate all the athletes for this achievement and thank them for all their hard work and determination. Success for Thurrock relay teams/Medal Success at National Champs

Success for Thurrock relay teams! Thurrock Harriers relay teams ran well on Saturday at the Essex Relay Championships at Garon Lane Southend bringing home 4 Essex medals in the process. Gold was brought home by the U13g’s team, a fairly new team ran very well on the day gaining a well deserved place on the top podium- U13g Essex Gold Medal winners – Funmi Adewole, Tumi Abbas, Alessia Daniele & Kennedy Beardwell. Silver was won by the U17 men, after a very close final race, all boys ran extremely well in a very tight race and was just beaten at the post by Orion. U17m Runners Up Essex Silver Medal winners – Charlie Splarn, Liam Chivers, Daniel Soyebo & Emmanuel Orebela. Bronze was brought home by the Senior men’s team, following a very tight race – Senior Men Essex Bronze Winners – Michael Shorthall, Ben Gibbs, Yinka Sopido and Nweike Nwabude. Another Bronze was won by the U17w team, who won their heat but came joint 2nd (timings) in the final and being awarded the bronze. U17w Essex Bronze Medal Winners – Kendrea Nwaelene, Lola Omowanile, Jess Whitbread & Fumi Olajide. Harriers through to EYAL Plate final

Thurrock Harriers have successfully gained themselves a place in the EYAL Plate final in September. On Sunday, Thurrock Harriers young athletes competed against Barnet & Shaftsbury, Dacorum & Tring, Herts & Ware/Enfield, St Albans and Southend, coming 2nd on the day with 669 points, only 40 points behind Barnet & Shaftsbury. The U13 Boys and U17 Men came 1st overall in their age group, U13 Girls and U17 women came 2nd in their age group and both the U15 Girls and Boys placed 3rd overall. This means that overall Thurrock came a very respectable 8th place out of 28 clubs after 4 rounds competing against various clubs around the Eastern region, overtaking clubs such as Southend and Watford, earning them a place in the Plate final in September. A big thank you to those athletes and parents who travelled out to Allianz Park on Sunday to represent the club for the final opportunity to gain the vital points needed to secure a place in the plate final. Hurdler’s Courage Ensures Seniors’ Success at Lee Valley

Club stalwart Michael Shortall’s unbroken record of attendance at 20 years of Southern League matches remains intact after sustaining a serious eye injury last week. Michael was determined to compete for Thurrock Harriers AC in his favourite events, the 110m Hurdles and 400m Hurdles and gained a valuable 11 points for the club.  Michael contributed to an excellent win by the team over St Albans by just 10 points with possible promotion next year, provided there is a similar commitment at the last match on 20th August. Other excellent performances came from Kendrea Nwaelene who won all three of her events and gained two personal bests in the Long and Triple Jump.  Jess Whitbread worked hard in the B String Long Jump with a long overdue personal best jump of 5.11m. The men’s 4x100m Relay team were magnificent, winning by a gap of 40m in a time of 44.33 and getting ever closer to the prestigious club record of 43.1 set in 1997. Three young intrepid novices, Sam Smith (3000m SC), Becky Barnard and Lucie Ball (1500mSC), tried out the Steeplechase event. “Never again! “ said Becky, who went on to run in the 4x400m Relay only 10 minutes later.  All three athletes scored 16 points between them. Eastern Vets League Match No. 3 at Southend 6th July 16 In the women’s event Sue Lawrence and Jill Boosey dominated the Women’s throws winning every throw event in their respective age groups. This meant they finished 4th team out of 6 without any jumpers or runners! The Men’s team finished second behind Southend, 5 points ahead of Loughton and with one match left they are on track to reach the regional finals in September. Highlights of the Under 50’s were Nigel Instance 1st Hammer, 2nd 400m Hurdles, Toby Draper 2nd 800m, 3rd Mile Walk, Marek Kowalski 4th 200m, 2nd Shot, and Iain Scott 3rd in the Pole Vault. Iain also did an impressive lead off leg in the 4 x 400m relay with the team eventually finishing 2nd to a strong Southend team. In the over 50’s Steve Kemp was 1st in the Mile Walk, 4th 200m , Jon Metcalf 1st 400m Hurdles, 2nd 800m , Martin Mach 4th Hammer, 3rd Shot; and Mark Jenkins 2nd Pole Vault, 3rd Long Jump.
