Essex XC Relays @ Hockley

At the Essex Cross Country Relays held at Hockley on Saturday Thurrock returned with 2 sets of medals. The mixed senior team took a well deserved Silver. All 4 team members excelled on the 3 mile course – all of them from the under 20 age group. Sam Smith (16.03), Brooke Mensah (20.28), Oliver Mann (16.08) and Gemma Holloway (15.48) saw them finish just 37 seconds behind winners, Orion Harriers. Gemma’s time was the fastest female time in the event. The under 15 boys took bronze. Harry Parker (9.19), Ben Prior (9.18) and Leon Wheeler (8.48) battled hard for the medals. In the same age group the B team were 8th. Henri Willett (10.04), Jamie Mack (9.48) and Finlay Lowe (9.47) were in that team. Again Leon’s time was the fastest in this section. The senior women’s team were a respectable 10th in the 28 teams to finish. Toni Radley (19.23), Victoria Peacock (20.13) and Sue Beck (20.39) can all feel pleased with their efforts especially newcomer Sue. It was good to see the senior men well represented. They fielded two teams that finished 15th and 27th in the 38 teams that finished. Fastest in the A team (Anthony Tobin, Nick Trencher, Don Lawless and John Green) was Nick Trencher with 17.27 and fastest B team (Gary Rowlatt, Paul Mitchell, Gary Cahill & Richard Amery) runner was Gary Cahill...

This Week Results…..

Gemma Holloway crowned a brilliant cross country season at Castle Donington on Saturday by finishing runner up in the national cross country championships for under 20s. She was beaten only by Harriet Knowles-Jones from Warrington but was comfortably in front of the rest of the field.  This brilliant run means that she will further her international career in Edinburgh later this month. Alec Finch rounded off his best ever cross country season by coming 233rd in the senior mens National Cross Country Championships. He recently made the Loughborough University A team, no mean feat, and can look forward to a successful track season. The 800m and 1500m have been his forte for some years and this year a marked improvement is on the cards. Demi Eves, who earlier in the week had finished 4th in the year 7 County Schools Cross Country championship, had an outstanding day in the indoor event at Lea Valley. She recorded pbs in the 60m, 200m and 600m in a track minithon. Her time of 1m47s for 600m indicates that a very fast 800m is due in the summer. Returning to the midweek cross country race 2 other performances caught the eye. Harry Parker finished 5th in the year 8 boys race earning an invitation to the inter county event later this month. Dhillon Harrod just missed out on this selection but finished in...

This Weekend Results….

Thurrock’s endurance athletes had a busy weekend spreading themselves between Bexhill, Colchester, Great Bentley and Orsett Heath. The Essex Cross Country League held its fifth and final round on the grassy slopes of Abbey Fields, Colchester on Sunday. Harry Parker won his under 13 boys race rounding off his overall victory in great style. He also led his team to the season’s championship on Saturday; Finlay Lowe was 7th, Jamie Mack 10th (pb), Dylan Harrod 20th, Sunny Vehitt 29th and Teddy Norcott 38th. These boys have been the basis of the team for the whole season. The under 13 girls team was 2nd for the season; Demi Eaves 8th, Sarah Blockley 10th, Hannah Peacock 18th, Emily Ford 32nd, Maddie Booty 39th were the finishers on Saturday. The under 15 boys team finished 4th for the season; Taylor Newell was an excellent 5th, Ben Prior 13th, Henri Willett, following his park run win on Saturday, finished 20th, Mason Hambleton was 30th. Amber Pullinger, who didn’t run on Sunday, was 2nd overall in the league individual championship and her team was 2nd in the league under 15 girl’s championship. Her team for the season finished 2nd but on Saturday only Hayley Instance ran and finished in a season’s best 5th. The senior men have had a poor season and shockingly on Sunday fielded only 4 runners. However, Keith Martin’s 51st place...

Cross Country

Gemma Holloway proved again on Saturday that she is coming of age as an athlete. She totally dominated the under 20 women’s section in the Southern Counties X-C Championship. In the lead at the top of the first gruelling hill she went on to win by 7 seconds from Law of Kingston and Poly. Another athlete from the Brenda Stone stable who shone on Saturday was Harry Parker. Not in the best of health since Christmas, he turned in a gritty performance to finish 11th, 26 seconds in front of the next Essex competitor. Best team performance came from the solid and ever-improving under 17 squad. Joe Logan 85th and Oliver Mann 96th, two relative novices, had great runs and Sam Smith 104th and Jody Meredith reinforced their efforts, to enable the team to finish 11th. Another complete team was the under 15 squad. Their scoring runners were Leon Wheeler 72nd, Taylor Newell 106th, Ben Prior 130th and Sarab Dhillon 210th, and the team finished a respectable 23rd. Mason Hambleton 212th and Henri Willett 221st also finished the gruelling course. In the other races Jamie Mack 102nd and Dylan Harrod 144th had their first taste of the Parliament Hill mud in the under 13s boys. Hayley Instance 94th, Lucie Ball 121st and Amy Raven 182nd made up the incomplete under 15 girls squad. Ever reliable Brooke Mensah beat 60...
